The Science of Magic
Unlike other stories were magic is a positive force or just a force of nature, magic in this world is actually a malevolent, corruptible energy that slowly turns one into a monster in more than one way.
Let me explain; Magic was introduced into this world through Sakazu as a means of producing super powered giants of pure energy called mages, which he harbors away for an army. Magic might be a useful tool to some, but to most, it slowly eats at your mind and body until your morality is gone.
Sakazu created the Sovereign Mage, which in turn created the regular mages. Those in turn grant magic and a select number of magic spells to those who touch the giant diamond shape that makes up the core of the beast. Magic extends the life up to around three hundred years after becoming a spellcaster, but once that time is done, the magic overtakes the body, burning the flesh away and turning the bone into a crystal like structure that forms the skeleton of the mage.
There is a total of 55 usable magic spells and buffs that magic provides, but the general spellcaster only has access to seven to fourteen of those spells. Spells can be combined for additional affects and can be used in surprising ways, such as using water and plantlife spells to turn an acre of desert into a lush oasis.
Though Magic is a common sight and part of the daily life in Oria, in Terraina, it is a very different story. The Brotherhood of Wizardry, which now functions as little more than a militarized terrorist force, has negatively impacted the reputation of spellcasters as a whole. Each province handles spellcasters in different ways, from outright hunting them to coexisting with an uneasy peace, but there is always an underlying sense of hatred and distrust directed at them. Because of this, most spellcasters, even those who want to live honest lives, find no other way to survive than to join The Brotherhood. With the efforts of The Omega Anti-Mages in particular to erase the spellcasters, more and more spellcasters view The Brotherhood as a force of heroes and freedom fighters, and in response, Brotherhood Commander Astiel Staw has ordered the Brotherhood to liberate any captured spellcaster they come across.
